The Pacific side and Central Valley are driest from December to April; the Caribbean coast has its own drier spell in September–October, when the Pacific is at its wettest.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • To reach the southern Nicoya Peninsula, take the car ferry from Puntarenas to Paquera (about 70 minutes) for Montezuma, Santa Teresa and Tambor; for Sámara and Nosara, board the Playa Naranjo ferry instead. Check which port your ticket names.
  • On the Caribbean coast, order rondón in Cahuita or Puerto Viejo — a coconut-milk stew of seafood and root vegetables from the Afro-Caribbean kitchen, served with coconut rice and beans.
  • For Tortuguero’s green turtles, go between July and October and book the night walk with an authorised guide; only the guide carries a red-filtered light, and flash is forbidden.
  • At San José’s National Museum, look for the bullet marks on the old Bellavista barracks: after the 1948 civil war Costa Rica abolished its army and handed the fortress over as a museum.
