Travel by Ildy tips
- Reach the island of Santo Antão by ferry from Mindelo on São Vicente: the crossing to Porto Novo takes about an hour. Confirm sailing times locally the day before, as schedules change, and arrive early at the terminal.
- Order cachupa, the slow-cooked stew of hominy, beans, cassava and fish or meat; next morning, look for cachupa guisada, the leftovers fried and served with an egg and linguiça.
- Visit Santo Antão’s fertile Paúl valley in the first half of the year, when the cane harvest feeds the traditional trapiches and stills that make grogue, the island rum; the exact pressing months vary by valley and year.
- On Santiago, Cidade Velha — the former Ribeira Grande — was the first European colonial town built in the tropics. Its 16th-century marble pillory still stands in Pillory Square, a stark reminder of the city's later role in Atlantic trade and the trafficking of enslaved people.
