Canada

Atlantic fishing towns, French-speaking Québec, Rocky Mountain lakes and Pacific rainforest — Canada rewards one well-chosen corridor rather than a dash between icons.

Above Lake Louise, hike about 3.5 km and 400 m up to the Lake Agnes Tea House, built by the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1901 and serving tea since 1905; supplies still arrive on foot.

June to September suits most road and nature travel; autumn colour, winter and wildlife seasons vary sharply by province.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Mind the clocks when travelling east or west: Canada spans six time zones, including Newfoundland’s half-hour offset, so Vancouver is three hours behind Toronto and Newfoundland half an hour ahead of Halifax.
  • In Montréal’s Little Italy, graze Jean-Talon Market, open since 1933 and year-round, where some 300 mostly local farmers fill the arcades from May to October beside Québec cheesemongers.
  • Moraine Lake Road is closed to private cars year-round: reserve a Parks Canada shuttle from the Lake Louise Park and Ride, which links both lakes in a single day in season.
  • Walk Québec City’s ramparts: Old Québec is the only city north of Mexico whose fortified walls still stand, entered through gates such as Porte Saint-Louis and Porte Saint-Jean.
