Camogli

A small fishing town on the Ligurian coast, Camogli pairs tall, colour-washed houses with a working harbour, pebble beaches and the green slopes of Monte di Portofino.

Climb the mule path to San Rocco, then continue towards Punta Chiappa for views across the Golfo Paradiso; return by boat from Porto Pidocchio when the seasonal service is running.

May to June and September to early October offer warm days, pleasant sea temperatures and a quieter waterfront than in peak summer.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Take the boat from Camogli’s pier to the Abbey of San Fruttuoso: the crossing of about 30 minutes ends at a cove with no road access, and the alternative is a walk of roughly two hours through the Portofino park. Sailings depend on sea conditions, so keep a margin for the return.
  • Order focaccia col formaggio: yeast-free dough stretched into two paper-thin sheets around melting crescenza. Its IGP allows it only in Recco, Avegno, Sori and Camogli.
  • Be here on the second weekend of May for the Sagra del Pesce: bonfires and the San Fortunato procession on Saturday night, then fish fried for all in a pan some four metres wide.
  • Look closely at the tall seafront houses: many windows, shutters, cornices and balconies are trompe-l’oeil; by local tradition the bright façades also helped sailors pick out their homes from the sea.
