Cambodia

Cambodia combines Angkor's monumental landscape with river towns, living craft traditions, forest regions and a subtle Khmer cuisine.

Historic places

Hike up to Kbal Spean in the Kulen hills north-east of Angkor, where 11th-century carvers cut rows of lingas and Hindu deities into the sandstone riverbed itself.

November to February is cooler and drier; the green season brings dramatic landscapes but heavier rain and changing rural access.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Dress for the temples: at Angkor’s sacred sites, shoulders and knees must be covered, for women and men alike, and staff may ask you to cover up. Carry a light scarf or long trousers in your day bag.
  • In Kampot province, visit a pepper farm in the Elephant Mountain foothills: Kampot pepper, sold green, black, red and white, carries a protected geographical indication in the EU since 2016.
  • Around the spring and autumn equinoxes, watch sunrise from Angkor Wat's western causeway: the sun rises directly over the central tower, an alignment built into the temple's design.
  • Each rainy season the Tonlé Sap river reverses its flow, pushing Mekong water back into the great lake, which swells many times over and sustains its floating villages.
