Bulgaria

Bulgaria combines Black Sea shores, rose valleys, mountain monasteries and old towns shaped by Thracian, Slavic and Ottoman layers.

Hidden places

In Plovdiv, lose yourself in Kapana — 'the trap' — whose angled lanes still bear the names of the blacksmiths, goldsmiths and tailors who worked here from the 16th century, now shared with studios and cafés.

May to June and September suit cultural routes and the coast; winter is best reserved for mountain and ski travel.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • From Sofia Airport, take metro line M4 from the station next to Terminal 2 into town. Serdika, in the historic centre, is the main place to change lines, for example to M2 for the Central Railway Station.
  • Start the day like Bulgarians do: a warm wedge of banitsa, filo layered with egg, yoghurt and white brined cheese, with a glass of boza, the thick, slightly sour fermented grain drink sold in every bakery.
  • Come to the Rose Valley between late May and early June and join a picking at dawn: Damask roses are gathered while still wet with dew, when their oil is richest, in villages around Kazanlak.
  • At Kazanlak, the 4th-century BC Thracian tomb is sealed to protect its frescoes; a full-scale replica beside it lets you stand beneath the painted dome of the funeral feast and chariot race.
