Bangkok

Golden temples, rooftop nights, river ferries and some of Asia's most exciting food — Bangkok is intense, elegant and endlessly layered.

November to February for drier, cooler days; shoulder months can be quieter and better value.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • From Suvarnabhumi Airport, take the Airport Rail Link City Line to Phaya Thai, about half an hour away, where a skywalk leads to the BTS Skytrain. For the MRT Blue Line, change at Makkasan instead.
  • In Talat Phlu, an old Sino-Thai quarter on the Thonburi side, look for gui chai – Teochew chive dumplings that became the neighbourhood's signature – plus khao mu daeng and old-style sweets.
  • Use Bangkok's waterways to link the old districts, then finish at Khlong Ong Ang in the evening: the restored canal walk has local food stalls, street art and weekend activity, and it sits only a short walk from Sam Yot MRT.
  • Bangkok's full ceremonial name, beginning 'Krung Thep Maha Nakhon', runs to 168 letters and is listed by Guinness World Records as the world's longest place name.
