Austria moves effortlessly from imperial cities and vineyard taverns to clear alpine lakes, contemporary culture and deeply rooted regional traditions.

Walk the Semmering railway trail from Semmering station to the '20-Schilling-Blick', the viewpoint over the Kalte Rinne viaduct once printed on the old 20-schilling note; the line has been UNESCO-listed since 1998.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Plan around Austria’s Sunday closing: most shops are shut on Sundays and public holidays, so stock up on Saturday. Exceptions include many shops in railway stations and airports, as well as bakeries and petrol stations.
  • In Styria, look for Steirisches Kürbiskernöl g.g.A., the dark-green first-press pumpkin-seed oil, drizzled not only over salad but over vanilla ice cream — an unlikely, nutty marriage that works.
  • Arrive in Hallstatt by train: the station lies on the opposite shore, and a small boat timed to the trains crosses in about 15 minutes, so the village reveals itself from the lake, not a car park.
  • In Vienna's wine villages, a bundle of pine twigs hung above a door and a sign reading 'Ausg'steckt' mean the Heuriger is open and pouring its own wine.
