October to April for Patagonia's lakes and glaciers; November paints Buenos Aires violet with jacarandas, and June to December brings southern right whales to Península Valdés.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • In Buenos Aires, check which airport your ticket uses: Ezeiza, 30–35 km from the centre, handles most long-haul flights, while Aeroparque, only about 7 km away on the river, serves domestic routes and a few regional ones. Allow generous time to cross the city between them.
  • In Cafayate, in Salta's high Calchaquí Valleys, taste Torrontés, Argentina's aromatic signature white, at a bodega among vineyards that climb well above 1,600 metres.
  • For whales at Península Valdés, aim for September or October: southern right whales stay from about June to December, and spring brings calmer boat days from Puerto Pirámides.
  • Ushuaia's End of the World Train follows the route of the old 'prisoners' train', which carried convicts from the Ushuaia prison to cut timber in the forest.
