Antalya

Turquoise Mediterranean water, Roman-era old-town lanes and a vast resort coastline make Antalya one of Türkiye's easiest sun destinations.

Hidden places

At Lara, about 8 km east of the centre, see the Lower Düden waterfall plunge some 40 metres from the cliff straight into the sea — best of all from a boat out of the old Kaleiçi harbour.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Give a day to Termessos, a ruined Pisidian city on the slopes of Güllük Mountain roughly 30 km from Antalya. Go by car or taxi to the car park, then allow about an hour on foot up to the ruins, and bring water and sturdy shoes.
  • Order Antalya piyazı, registered as a geographical indication in 2017: white beans in a tahini, garlic and lemon tarator, eaten here as a main course alongside şiş köfte.
  • Plan an autumn visit around the Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival, staged at night in the Roman theatre of Aspendos; recent editions have run in September.
  • Walk under Hadrian’s Gate, the three-arched marble gateway built for Emperor Hadrian’s visit around AD 130; look down for the deep ruts that centuries of cartwheels cut into its paving.
