Alberobello

Whitewashed trulli, stone lanes and the olive-grove landscapes of Puglia make Alberobello a distinctive base for a southern Italian road trip.

Historic places

Step inside the Trullo Sovrano, the only trullo built on two levels with an internal staircase, then wander Aia Piccola, the quieter trulli quarter where most cones still shelter everyday homes.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Reach Alberobello from Bari by Ferrovie del Sud Est regional train, which leaves from its own platforms at Bari Centrale and takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. The line goes on to Locorotondo and Martina Franca, so you can explore the Valle d’Itria without a car.
  • Seek out capocollo di Martina Franca, the cured pork neck of the neighbouring Valle d'Itria town, protected by an EU geographical indication and best eaten thinly sliced.
  • Walk between the two trulli quarters along Largo Martellotta, the main street, which follows the course of the old river Cana; climbing from it into Rione Monti, the cones stack up before you.
  • According to local tradition, the Acquaviva counts of Conversano required houses built of dry stone, without mortar, so they could be dismantled to dodge the Spanish viceroy's taxes; the painted symbols and pinnacles on the cones are the builders' signatures.
